What is .net performance counters in asp dot net

I am a novice in asp.net. I just came across the term .net performance counters, what is this exactly mean? Where this performance counter comes in the scene while creating a web application? Are these .net performance counters used very often?

ASP.Net support 2 types of performance counters, one counter is for system that shows on the windows performance monitor and other one is for application. Application performance counters are shown as .net objects.
