What is a gzip file? How can we write a gzip file to a local machine?

Here is a problem that I found while trying to write the file into a local system. I could successfully compress the file and write to the local system. I moved to a remote system and tried uncompressing it with another gzip application software but I got some errors and couldn’t open it. Do you know why?
