You are not going to believe this. But you can run the Xserver without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Now what happens is the Xserver will try to scan video resolutions that best fit you video card and monitor. And it will also setup mouse/keyboard and anything it can find connected to the PC (that the Xserver needs to run). All you need to do is look for "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to see what is happening. Currently, the VESA driver is can be broken on some ATI cards. And not all Nvidia cards can run with the "nv" driver (but can run with the VESA). But once you install the non-free drivers, you should be O.K.
